What Is The Difference Between 300 Win Mag. And 300 PRC?

The 300 PRC (Precision Rifle Cartridge) is based off the beltless .375 Ruger cartridge, which was a design partnership between Hornady and Ruger back in 2008.

In 2018, Hornady released the 300 PRC, joining the competition in the favorites list of those hard-hitting, reliable .30 Caliber rounds.

Some other popular .30 cal rounds include:

  • .300 Savage
  • .300 H&H Magnum
  • .300 Weatherby Magnum
  • 30-30 Winchester
  • .300 CPM (Ruger Compact Magnum)
  • .300 WSM
  • .300 Blackout
  • .308
  • .30-06
  • .300 Winchester Magnum

.300 PRC vs 300 Win Mag. Highlights

The .300 PRC has a greater round length, but a shorter case length than the .300 Win Mag.

PRC’s 300 rifle cartridge is the same diameter as the .300 Win. Mag.’s belt, but with less taper. The Hornady 300 PRC boasts a 30-degree shoulder (as opposed to the 25-degree shoulder on the 300 Win. Mag.).

Thus, even though the .300 PRC case is slightly shorter at 2.58 inches than the Win. Mag., it offers about five percent more capacity.

The .300 PRC projectile has a long slim neck and added head height. This allows it to be loaded with high B.C. (ballistic-coefficient) bullets.

The cartridge was custom-developed to work best with 200+ grain bullets. There are currently only three mass-produced loads for .300 PRC.

In the .300 Win Mag world, however, you have a lot of options for ammo, since the .300 Win Mag operates in the 150-200 grain space. Unlike the .300 PRC, this Win Mag casing is not engineered to work with a 200+ grain round.

The .300 PRC bullet was designed to be the ultimate precision long-range bullet. This round fires with a flat, stable flight path and long-distance accuracy.

If you consistently shoot at far-away targets or hunt 1000lb game, this is your round.

Marksmen choose the 300 PRC rifle cartridge to hit far-off targets and drop animals ethically and cleanly at 400 yards with this punch-packing cartridge.

One of the most impressive aspects of this bullet was how it was developed to be the best: the creators built a new rifle and rifle bolt around the bullet.

While the usual route is to create a bullet to match a rifle, this approach gave the 300 PRC developers freedom to create an ideal cartridge without many of the usual design restrictions.
