Glock 17 vs. Glock 19: What’s the Difference?

Considering the litany of Glock pretenders, there is a seemingly constant battle to determine whether a new handgun is or isn’t a ‘Glock.’ However, there’s also an ongoing debate regarding which Glock is ‘best.’

Considering this debate, we aim to compare two popular Glock models: the 17 vs. the 19, to determine which is best for you.

Starting Simple: the Fundamental Differences Between the G17 and G19

Truthfully, a Glock feels like a Glock when holding, shooting, and carrying it. Typically, there are more significant differences between the various generations of the handgun than between the two platforms. However, the subtleties in those differences can change how you shoot, especially regarding size and weight.

Basics of Size Differences

The basics of size differences mean that all handguns are slightly varied. Between the standard G17 and the compact G19, the 17 is more prolonged and taller. Its barrel length is 4.49 inches, and the gun is 8.03 inches long.

On the other hand, the Glock 19 has a 4.02-inch barrel and a length of 7.36 inches. The Glock 17, which holds 17+1 rounds of 9mm, stands 5.47 inches tall. Holding 15+1 of the same ammunition, the Glock 19 stands 5.04 inches overall.

Width is the same for both pistols at 1.26 inches, making them reasonably narrow despite their capacities.

Pistol Weight Differences

When the G19 was first released, its weight and carrying capacity were impressive, given most pistols of similar dimensions were much heavier. Today, however, the G19 is average for a compact pistol.

Regarding unloaded weight, the G17 is slightly heavier at 24.87 ounces compared to the G19’s 23.63 ounces. Loaded, the standard G17 weighs 32.28 ounces, and the G19 weighs 30.16.

Despite these minor weight differences, many of the frame metrics are identical. This is the power of the Glock - the simplicity of design accommodates different needs while preventing significant deviations.

Compact vs. Standard Glock Models

It’s interesting to note Glock considers the 19 their “compact” model, whereas the 17 is a standard, full-size service pistol. This marketing implies that the G19 is somewhat concealable for everyday use.

Many consider the G19 a ‘goldilocks’ of guns, as it can serve almost any role. It’s small enough for most people to conceal effectively while shooting like a full-size gun.

Granted, the G17 is a full-sized pistol, and it doesn’t take much to become proficient with one. The G17 is considered a duty pistol, more suited to Law Enforcement or use in the field for security, contracting, or even military applications.

Which Came First, the Glock 17 or 19?

The Glock 17 gained a ton of traction in the competition space as it became the pistol of choice for several shooters, especially Taran Butler with Taran Tactical. Their wins resulting from Glock 17 usage pushed the product even further. The popularity of the Glock has continued to rise in almost every facet of pistol use cases.

The Glock 17 was developed in the 80s for the Austrian Military by Gaston Glock. Glock rose to prominence through the 90s after beating several well-respected and established brands, such as H&K and FN. By the early 90s, over 250,000 G17s were in circulation in the United States alone. Traction amongst law enforcement and civilian use continued to grow.

The “compact” variant of the G17, definitively named the G19, was released in 1988. However, it wasn’t until later development that it began to gain traction with civilian and competition use. Today, the Glock 19 remains the most widely sold handgun in the world and the best “all-around” pistol on the market.

Shooting Comparisons Between the G17 and G19

There are more than just sizing factors to consider when shooting the two Glocks at hand. Evaluating the 9mm caliber configurations (grain weight, jacket type, etc.), it becomes clear that the Glock 17 has a few simple advantages regarding recoil control and accuracy.

Accuracy

Accuracy is almost always a product of the shooter rather than the pistol. However, the longer barrel and frame of the G17 will help with recoil absorption and control when fired. The G17 also provides the bullet with extra length to travel through, making it equally, if not more accurate, across distance.

Recoil

Since both the Glock 17 and 19 use 9mm ammo, they have similar shooting profiles and patterns. The 9mm is the standard choice round and essentially provides the shooter with the same felt recoil.

Few notice much difference between G17 and G19 recoils, and shooter control tends to be nearly identical. Only the most experienced shooters notice the nuances and differences, but that can be true for all models.

Modifications

The mechanics of the guns are nearly identical. Still, the slightly larger frame, slider, and barrel of the G17 give the shooter the few extra benefits that a larger semi-automatic pistol would offer.

Beyond actual sizing, nearly all modifications are available for both pistols. Glocks are unique because you can transform them to adapt optics, accessories, and component mechanisms to meet various performance demands.

Carrying Capacity

The most significant difference between the two pistols is the carrying capacity. While it isn’t by a large margin, the Glock 17 offers two more rounds per magazine. Some shooters will say that in a carry situation, this does indeed matter.

Final Thoughts on Glock 19 vs. Glock 17

With these two pistols, the differences aren’t decision-driving because everything about the two pistols remains similar. Price certainly isn’t a key factor as the Glock 17 and 19 stay within $10-20 of each other in out-the-door cost.

Choosing between these two pistols depends on who you are as a shooter and your preferences for everyday carry. Ask yourself what you require from a handgun, and determine if a compact or standard-sized pistol would fit your needs.

The Glock 17 and the Glock 19 are considered top-tier handguns for any application. Either platform is a great choice, regardless of your experience or capability, and would serve you well!
