Famous Guns From The Rambo Movies

Let’s face it, Rambo is one badass, sweatband-rocking dude that makes us all want to get big knives and bigger guns. These movies remind us that confidence and perseverance are unstoppable characteristics–and it features exhilarating gun fights and explosions to boot!

Speaking of guns, these movies are full of some serious firepower. IMFD showcases a range of bullet-spitting weapons, from the classic to the iconic:

What Guns Did Rambo Use?

Rambo: First Blood starts off early with the Smith & Wesson Model 66 and Model 10. The model 66 is a .357 magnum revolver, while the Model 10 is a .38 special revolver.

Then in Rambo (2008), we see a Burmese pirate try to take out Rambo with the Walther P38 9mm ammunition.

Rambo kills a Burmese pirate, who drops a Tokarev TT-33 (which accepts the 7.62x25mm Tokarev cartridge.

Later in a flashback to the “First Blood” film, there is a Colt M1911A1. However, this scene was changed due to negative feedback from the screen testers.

In the final battle the villain, Major Pa Tee Tint, wields a Jericho 941 RS Semi-Compact as his personal sidearm. This handgun can take 9x19mm or .45 ACP ammo.

Assault Rifles Used In Rambo Movies

The Rambo movie series contains a plethora of assault rifles:

First you have the AKM, invented in 1959 to replace the AK-47. It has a rate of fire of 600 rounds per minute and takes 7.62x39mm Soviet intermediate cartridges. The AKM is seen multiple times all throughout Rambo: First Blood Part II.

In Rambo III, you have the Type 56 used by the Mujahideen fighters. The Type 56 is the Chinese copy of the AKM/AK-47, with the main characteristic setting it apart from the AK series being the fact that the front sight is fully enclosed and hooded.

Then there’s the classic M16 rifle, one of the most commonly used weapons in the Rambo First Blood film. The M16A1 uses 5.56x45mm ammunition and usually comes stock with a 20-round magazine.

Side note–as popular as the M16A1 was in both the movies and real life, it was eventually phased out in favor of the M4A1 carbine. The M4 was developed in the 1980s and is the shortened version of the M16. It takes 5.56x45mm, and is still in service today within the United States military.

Shotguns Used By Rambo

Every action-packed film needs a shotgun or two. The Rambo films consist of a couple notable shotguns. The two that come to mind are the 12 Gauge Double-Barreled Shotgun and the Remington 870 Folding Stock.

One scene in First Blood shows a hunter firing a double barrel shotgun into the air. The double barrel shotgun design comes in two configurations: side-by-side (SxS) or vertically (O/U). SxS barrels are horizontally aligned and allow for practical design for muzzleloaders. The more modern design is the O/U vertically aligned barrels. The vertical barrels are used more often in sporting doubles.

The Remington 870 folding stock appears to be the state troopers’ weapon of choice in Rambo: First Blood. The Remington 870 is a O/U pump-action shotgun that takes 12 gauge ammunition. Developed in the 1950’s and still used today, this Remington model shows up in First Blood with a customized foldable stock to it. The purpose of such a stock is to shorten the weapon and make it easier to transport.

Legendary Sniper Rifle In Rambo

Rambo (2008) has the SAS-trained sniper ‘School Boy’ character sporting a Barrett M107CQ sniper rifle during one a night raid. Also known as the Barrett M82, this sniper rifle uses 50 caliber or 12.7mm ammunition.

The film equips a silencer to the Barrett and portrays the shot as fully silent. In real life, however, a .50 caliber weapon can only be partially suppressed, as the round is super sonic.

Sometimes You Gotta Go Just A Little Bit Bigger...

The Rambo movie series is famous for big explosion scenes. Rambo is no stranger to rocket launchers and what better way to kick off a career in making things go ‘boom’ than with an M72 LAW? This heavy-hitter launches 66mm ammunition and travels at 145m/s.

In First Blood Part II Rambo finds himself in a helicopter battle against Lieutenant Colonel Podovsky. Rambo lands the helicopter after being shot up by machine guns. He then pulls out the M72 LAW and is able to hit his shot through the broken helicopter windshield to take out Podovsky.

Most Iconic Gun of All Rambo Movies

Rambo acquires an M60 by hijacking a National Guard truck. After kicking the driver out, he blasts through a police barricade with this 7.62mm caliber weapon, then sets up a roadblock of his own via gasoline explosion.

The M60 machine gun is probably the most iconic weapon within the Rambo movie series. This monster of firepower was designed all the way back in 1952, but wasn’t put into service until 1957. It is still in use today.

The M60 supports multiple types of ammunition, including ball, tracer and armor-piercing rounds. It is also a belt-fed machine gun, meaning the ammunition can be seen going into the weapon from the outside as it is fired–as shown in the wildly memorable scene of Rambo firing into a mainstreet business.

Gun lovers and the Rambo series go hand-in-hand like firearms and explosions. And when you’re ready to channel your own “inner-Rambo,” we’ve got the big brands and bigger bullets to get you there.
